Funnel-web or mouse spider
Treat as life-threatening — apply pressure immobilisation (see snake bite) and call 000.
Redback spider
- Apply a cold pack (wrapped) to relieve pain.
- Do not apply a pressure bandage — it makes the pain worse.
- Seek medical aid. Antivenom is available if needed.
White-tail, huntsman, other Australian spiders
- Wash the bite with soap and water.
- Apply an ice pack.
- Seek medical aid if symptoms worsen, the bite becomes infected, or the bite is on the face or near the eyes.

Which spiders need pressure immobilisation?
Funnel-web and mouse spiders only. Treat exactly like a snake bite and Call 000.
Why not bandage a redback bite?
Redback venom acts slowly and the pressure bandage makes the pain much worse. Use a cold pack for pain relief and seek medical aid.
Is the white-tail spider really flesh-eating?
No — research has not found a link between white-tail bites and skin ulcers. Wash the bite, apply ice, and see a doctor if it becomes infected.
